LEDs: Its Begining Of End For The Traditional Light BulbS

In the beginning, there was darkness.
Then came fire.
It wasn’t until the 19th century that artificial light was first generated. The big leap came in the 1880s, when Thomas Edison lit homes with the incandescent bulb. Since then, for the next 130 years, incandescents ruled the nights, the roads, and especially the Christmas tree.
But now, the incandescent light bulb, one of the most venerable inventions of its era but deemed too inefficient for our own, will be phased off the U.S. market beginning in 2012 under the new energy law just approved by Congress.  In Europe alsom the stage has been set for the imminent death of the incandescent light bulb. And the rest of the World is also following the same. Already many stores across the world stopped stocking the good old bulbs already.
The days of the traditional incandescent bulb look numbered because these electricity-sapping glass orbs have fallen out of favour with environmentally-conscious governments and consumers.

Gaming On iOS And Android

Social Networking Set To Overtake Gaming On iOS And Android

Games have historically taken larger usage on mobile. The app revolution has changed the way software is distributed and used among consumers.  With a perfect storm of digital distribution, free content and powerful touch screen devices, the success of mobile apps has disrupted industries from telecommunications and games to music and news.To date, no category of apps has been more successful than Games, directly disrupting the traditional gaming industry.
But, now a sign that something fundamental is changing on the iOS and Android platforms, mobile analytics provider Flurry has found that consumers are spending as much time in social networking apps as they are in mobile games.
The last time that Flurry took a look back in January, it found that half of app sessions were spent in games while 30 percent was spent in social networking apps.

GOOGLE Self-driving Car

Google Gets Licence For Self-driving Car In US

Driver-less cars will soon be a reality on the roads of Nevada after the state approved America’s first self-driven vehicle license.
The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles has issued the first license plates that will allow Google’s autonomous cars onto public highways. The first to hit the highway will be a Toyota Prius modified by search firm Google, which is leading the way in driver-less car technology.
Nevada is the first state to devise licensing procedures for autonomous vehicles, and Google is the one of the leaders in that field, having hired some of the top talent that took part in the DARPA Grand and Urban Challenges. Google‘s fleet will have red Nevada license plates with a Greek infinity symbol, intended to alert other drivers that a computer has control of the vehicle.
Googles Driver-less Car
The car uses video cameras mounted on the roof, radar sensors and a laser range finder to “see” other traffic. Engineers at Google have previously tested the car on the streets of California, including crossing San Francisco’s Golden Gate bridge.  For those tests, the car remained manned at all times by a trained driver ready to take control if the software failed. According to software engineer Sebastian Thrun, the car has covered 140,000 miles with no accidents, other than a bump at traffic lights from a car behind.
This is what the car sees while navigating through the roads.
Bruce Breslow, director of Nevada’s Department of Motor Vehicles, says he believes driver-less vehicles are the “cars of the future“. Nevada changed its laws to allow self-driven cars in March. The long-term plan is to license members of the public to drive such cars. Google’s car has been issued with a red licence plate to make it recognisable. The plate features an infinity sign next to the number 001. Other states, including California, are planning similar changes.
“The vast majority of vehicle accidents are due to human error,” said California state Senator Alex Padilla, when he introduced the legislation.
“Through the use of computers, sensors and other systems, an autonomous vehicle is capable of analyzing the driving environment more quickly and operating the vehicle more safely.”

What is threatening global IT industry

What is threatening global IT industry

Big emerging markets led by China are increasing protectionist measures in the tech sector, hurting one of the most dynamic parts of the global economy, a US industry study said Wednesday.

The Business Software Alliance (BSA) report said the new trade barriers which discriminate against foreign information technology products and services are often disguised as measures to spur local innovation or to protect security

The alliance said the trend is troubling because the developing markets are seeing the fastest growth in the IT sector but are shutting out a lot of goods and services from the US and Europe.

Microsoft‘s Surface

Microsoft‘s Surface: when the keyboard is key

When Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) took the wraps off its Surface tablets on Monday in Los Angeles, it was the brightly hued keyboard that stole the show.
The "Touch Cover" - a protective cover-cum-keyboard - could be a key differentiator for Microsoft as it tries to dent Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) iPad franchise, analysts said. It also represents the latest turn in an intensifying philosophical debate about how humans can best interact with their machines.
In the early days of the Apple iPad, argument raged about whether the device could succeed without a traditional keyboard--a question the gadget's subsequent popularity seemingly settled. But the iPad's "virtual" keyboard, which senses the heat of a finger on the glass screen, is considered by most users to be unsuitable for extensive typing.

Facebook stock's bad

Facebook stock's bad start reins in short sellers

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Facebook's weak stock market debut has a potential silver lining for the social media giant - some short sellers may have been scared off.

About 8.1 percent of the 421 million shares in the initial public offering were sold short as of May 31, about two weeks after its trading debut, according to a Reuters analysis of exchange data.

That percentage is lower than for Pandora Media Inc (NYS:P), LinkedIn Corp (LNKD.O), Angie's List Inc (ANGI.O) and Groupon Inc (GRPN.O) - half of the other Internet companies that went public in the past year. And Google Inc , with which Facebook is often compared, attracted a much higher short interest in the first couple of weeks after its IPO in 2004.

Short sellers borrow stock and then sell it, betting that it will decline in value and that they can then buy it back more cheaply.

SONY

Sony working on new all-in-one smartphone, hopes to make a turnaround in mobile space

a popular electronic goods chain down south, took stock of its IT and telecom business last September, it consciously chose to keep Sony Ericsson phones out. At the time, the store felt retail support for the brand was insufficient, it was losing consumer mindspace, and when compared to competitors like Samsung, its launch schedule was downright sluggish.

Around a couple of weeks ago, Vivek's revisited its decision and decided to bring Sony back. What made the retailer change its mind? "Recently when we did our own research we found that stores similar to ours were selling 200-300 pieces of Sony," says B S Vishal, AVP, IT and telecom,Vivek's. Today, Vivek's stocks not just Sony Mobile but has five people from the company stationed at the store, giving live demonstrations.

MICROSOFT HISTORY

Microsoft's long and tortured history in tablets

For decades, the tablet computer was like a mirage in the technology industry: a great idea, seemingly reachable on the horizon, that disappointed as hopeful companies got closer. Microsoft has experienced this cycle of hope and disappointment many times.

The device unveiled by the Redmond Washington-based software giant on Monday the Surface isn't the first tablet it envisioned. Indeed, the company's engineers have been trying to reshape personal computing for as long as there's been a PC.

The first PCs had keyboards, borrowed from the typewriter. But people quickly started wondering whether pens, which are more comfortable writing tools, wouldn't be a better basis for personal computing.

Dell VOSTRO

Hands on: Dell's New Vostro Business Notebooks

Dell Vostro

Today, Dell introduced an update to its mainstream business line, the affordable Vostro brand of business notebooks. The new laptops start at just $599 and promise to bring affordable Ivy Bridge processors to the small business segment of the market.
To be fair, the new Vostro line isn't the sleekest set of new laptops we've ever seen, but they're really not too bad, either. Looking at the side, the notebooks look awfully thick for a machine made in 2012, but it's deceiving. The port selection and venting make them appear much thicker than they are, which is a shame. This is especially true of the new Vostro 3360, which is quite slim for a entry-priced business notebook.

Dell Vostro

Speaking of ports, there's certainly no dearth. Multiple USB 3.0 ports, HDMI and VGA out, SD card slots, analog audio jacks - well, you get the idea.
Like other recent Dell business models, the Vostro 3360, 3460, and 3560 utilize a Chiclet- or island-style keyboard. Said keyboard's quality is reasonably impressive: there wasn't too much flex, which is nice to see in such an affordable model.
Above the screen is a built-in HD webcam as well as microphone array - Dell wants these laptops to be used for video conferencing and calls; there's an increasingly large market for equipment used for telepresence solutions.

Samsung Galaxy S3 blitzes iPhone 4S

Samsung Galaxy S3 blitzes iPhone 4S

The phone that forums around the informed world of internet tech sites are calling the 'iPhone killer'.
It's a tag that Samsung is quick to dismiss, but the Galaxy SIII is as much of a heavyweight in the smartphone market, as Mike Tyson was in professional boxing.
Priced by Samsung at close to Rs 44,000 the SGS3 is now being seen as a premium product in direct competiton with the iPhone 4S; even though in terms of pure hardware specs it's miles ahead of the Apple phone.
And yet, even as the buzz around the phone continues to grow, and experts rain accolades on the nifty gadget, there are some very strong arguments going against it.
In terms of market reality, the SGS3 may not be able to duplicate the success of its predecessor - Samsung Galaxy SII.
Here's why:
Price:
It's the biggest factor going against the S3. Pitched at nearly Rs 44,000 by Samsung; it's retailing at nearly Rs 39,000. Going by initial reactions, that's a bill not many are ready to foot. The common refrain seems to be, 'why not buy the iPhone?'
